2025 Senior Auto Inspection Event Recap
WHEATON, IL – October 24, 2025 – The Milton Township S.A.L.T. (Seniors And Law Enforcement Together) Council successfully completed its annual free auto safety inspection event on Saturday morning, inspecting 80 vehicles and helping area seniors prepare their cars for the upcoming winter months.
The October 18th event, held at Wheaton Fire Station One, brought together volunteers from across the community to provide complimentary safety inspections by certified automobile mechanics. Volunteers checked batteries, fluid levels, tire pressures, and vehicle registration tags, providing seniors with recommendations for necessary repairs and maintenance.
Community Rallies for Senior Citizens
“This event exemplifies the value of community members coming together to serve our seniors,” said Supervisor Buffy Higgins-Beard. “The teamwork demonstrated by our volunteers and partners is inspiring. We are deeply indebted to the S.A.L.T. Council—especially Chuck Smith—whose deft organization made this successful event possible.”
The generous support of numerous community partners and volunteers was essential: AAA Wheaton Car Care Plus, Technology Center of DuPage, Glenbard North Young Men’s Service League, and Scouting Troops 34 and 25. The City of Wheaton Fire Station One, Village of Glen Ellyn Police, DuPage County Sheriff’s Offices, and City of Wheaton Police assisted in hosting the event. In addition, the Milton Township Community Emergency Response Team helped maintain safety during the inspection.
S.A.L.T. Leaders Smith and Shifrin Retire, Leaving Legacy of Service
The event also marked a significant transition for the S.A.L.T. Council. After the successful completion of this year’s inspection event, S.A.L.T. Council Chair Chuck Smith retired following eight years of dedicated service, and Director of Communication Arnold Shifrin concluded an impressive 15-year tenure with the organization. Both leaders were instrumental in expanding S.A.L.T’s reach, offering educational scam prevention information, hosting community talks, and sponsoring the senior auto inspection.
Milton Township extends its deepest gratitude to Smith and Shifrin for their years of commitment to serving seniors and strengthening the partnership between seniors and law enforcement in the community.
Milton Township welcomes retired DuPage County Sheriff’s Officer Corporal Terri Albright as the incoming S.A.L.T. Chair. Corporal Albright brings a wealth of experience and a steadfast dedication to protecting and enhancing the lives of local Senior Citizens.
