ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS PROVIDED BY MILTON TOWNSHIP
General Assistance
General Assistance (GA) is a public assistance program mandated by state law for qualified individuals with financial needs. GA can provide monthly payments to help individuals meet basic needs including but not limited to rent and utilities. interested individuals can apply at the Township’s General Assistance Office. An applicant must be a resident of Milton Township and must meet all financial and non-financial eligibility requirements. The general Office has 30 days from receipt of a completed application in order to make a determination.
Emergency Assistance
Emergency Assistance (EA) is available to qualified individuals and families facing emergencies that are work related or life-threatening situations (i.e. eviction and utility disconnection). Those interested can apply at the Township’s General Assistance Office. Applicants must be residents of Milton Township and meet financial and non-financial eligibility requirements. Families and individuals receiving TANF or SSI are typically ineligible for Emergency Assistance. The General Assistance Office has 30 days from receipt of completed application in order to make a determination.
LIHEAP
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIIHEAP) assists low-income households by offsetting the rising cost of home energy through direct financial assistance, energy counseling, outreach and education. An overdue bill or disconnect notice is not required to receive LIHEAP assistance. Emergency assistance is available to eligible households whose utility service is in danger of disconnection or has been disconnected and for homeowners whose furnace is non-operational or determined unsafe to operate. LIHEAP will provide a one-time benefit to eligible households to be used for energy bills (i.e. ComEd and Nicor). The amount of the payment is determined by income, household size, fuel type and geographic location. LIHEAP is a state and federally funded energy assistance program for low-income families, in which utility bill payments are made on behalf of households.
